Food for thought, letters, stories and more...
A long time ago (or so it seems) people used to actually write letters. They didn't post on social media or text, "HB!" on your birthday - they actually sent something called, "MAIL." It still exists today, believe it or not! Boy, do I ever miss it. I miss receiving a paper invitation to a party. I miss the massive amounts of holiday cards in my mailbox. I used to hang all our holiday cards on the trim, around the doorways of my family room with scotch tape. By the time the new year would roll around, I'd be out of doorway space! This year, I hardly received enough cards to fill our fireplace mantle. People are too busy these days and forgetting about these small gestures that so many folks truly enjoy, need and miss.
Let's not forget the simple and stamp-free form of letters: passing notes! Passing notes during our school days was our time-honored method of classroom communication. I found out about my first crush from a note passed to me, during Ms. Clarkson's science class in 7th grade. I'm still blushing today and wished I had saved the tattered paper smeared with No. 2 pencil by the boy who stole my heart for 5 minutes!
Writing letters enables a personal connection and sometimes a soul-baring way of communication which could be deemed therapeutic. Letters allow us to take our time and decide what we want to say, as well as how we want to say it. I, for one, have been on both the sending side as well as receiving side of "text messages gone wrong!" Many times, I quickly rattled off a message and hit "send" before actually rereading what I had written... if I had take my time, I would have realized just how awful the message sounded in the first place. I can't be the only one guilty of this. Can I blame technology for how it has driven humans away from our humanity? We need to take responsibility and reconnect together. I realize that I'm writing this all on a website and anticipating your participation through technology! I'm no fool!
Let's just all go back in time together, and think before we post, reply or write. Be kind and thoughtful to each other. Remember the SALTOPIA SOCIETY is a feel-good forum! We are here to share our best days together, as well as our ideas. We are here to learn, appreciate and enjoy a deliciously happy environment together.
