Let's take a trip to Nagano, Japan together...
Nagano (長野県) is a prefecture located in the center of Japan and is surrounded on all four sides by tall mountains, earning the nickname “Roof of Japan”. Visitors to Nagano enjoy climbing and skiing the Japanese Alps. It’s the only place in the world people may be able to frolic with the great Japanese Snow Monkeys, as well as soak in an onsen. “Onsen” is a term for hot springs in the Japanese language. As a volcanically active country, Japan has thousands of onsen scattered throughout the land. Onsen were traditionally used as public bathing places and today play a central role in directing Japanese domestic tourism.
In 1998, Nagano hosted the Winter Olympics and Paralympics. The world-class snow resorts of Hakuba, Shiga Kogen Heights and Nozawa Onsen continue to attract winter sports enthusiasts every year. In addition, Nagano has convenient rail and expressway access to Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and other major cities, and is in close proximity to such premier sightseeing spots as Mt. Fuji, Hida-Takayama and the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route.
Nagano is also one of the few places in the world suitable for large-scale wasabi cultivation. In Japan, wasabi is cultivated mainly in these regions: Izu, Nagano and Iwate. Wasabi can only be grown in the purest, cleanest water, and Nagano is blessed with sparkling clean spring water fed by snowmelt from the Japanese Alps. The wasabi farms take advantage of this natural bounty and grow some of the highest quality Japanese wasabi. The wasabi farms in this region are a pleasure to visit. They offer many wasabi-related creations including wasabi flavored soft serve ice cream. Many farms offer clear bottom boat tours. It’s truly a magnificent experience and lends admiration for the spicy condiment we can regularly enjoy!
