Let's take a trip to Krabi, Thailand together...
Krabi (Thai: กระบี่) is one of the southern provinces of Thailand, on the shore of the Andaman Sea. The city of Krabi is the capital of the region. The name Krabi is associated with many legends. One relates to a battle over the daughter of the local governor, after which a recluse cursed all the people involved in the war and turned them into mountains, bays, caves and islands. The word “Krabi” means “sword” and it was used as the symbol of this province. Some historians say Krabi’s name comes from ‘krabue’ which means “buffalo,” since Krabi has a lot of buffalos and was the market for nearby provinces. No matter what Krabi means, it is undisputed that it is one of the most ancient cities. Much archaeological evidence has been found around the province. Prehistoric stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery and skeletal remains have been found in the province's many cliffs and caves, and it is thought that Krabi has been home to homo sapiens since the period 25,000 - 35,000 BC. Culture and cuisine only add to the beauty of Krabi. The traditional flavors and dishes have become successfully themed Thai restaurants all over the world. Rice is the main dietary staple of Thailand. Thais eat two kinds of |
rice: white and “sticky.” Sticky rice rolled into a ball is most common at daily meals. It is also used in desserts throughout the country. Rice is eaten at almost every meal and also made into flour used in noodles, dumplings, and desserts. Most main dishes include beef, chicken, pork, or seafood, but the Thais also eat vegetarian dishes. Thai food is known for its unique combinations of seasoning. Although it is hot and spicy, Thai cooking is carefully balanced to bring out all the different flavors in a dish. Curries (dishes made with a spicy powder called curry) are a mainstay of Thai cooking. Hot chilies also appear in many Thai dishes. Other common flavorings are fish sauces and pastes, lemon grass, coriander, basil, garlic, ginger, cumin, cardamom, and cinnamon. Soup, eaten with most meals, helps balance the hot flavors of many Thai dishes, as do steamed rice, mild noodle dishes, and sweet desserts. Coconuts play an important role in the Thai diet. Coconut milk and shredded coconut are used in many dishes, especially desserts.
